Fritz Lang and the motifs of his film M – Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder (1931) have been an inexhaustible source of inspiration for multimedia artist Ivan Faktor, who revisited them with the complex work-in-progress project Kangaroo Court. Conceived as a reconstruction of a scene from the film in which members of the Berlin underworld hold an illegal trial for a psychopathic child murderer, the project’s first phase—realized in June 2005—took the form of a photograph. In the devastated setting of a former Zagreb factory, about two hundred anonymous and well-known extras brought the Berlin underworld to life.
