Film EDUcation

In the Tuškanac Cinema, during the 2012/2013 school year, the Film Education Program (Filmska naSTAVa) was launched—a unique film literacy program in the Republic of Croatia. It is the only film education program intended for high school students and is completely free for all participants.

It was founded by Dr. Ana Đordić and Dr. Jelena Modrić at the initiative of Vera Robić Škarica. The program takes place every year in at least two cycles: during the winter and spring school holidays. Over five instructional days in each cycle, students have the opportunity to watch five diverse, artistically relevant, and mostly lesser-known films on the big screen. After each screening, the films are analyzed and interpreted, which involves acquiring basic film literacy and, consequently, an understanding of the language of film. The goal of the program is to educate young people in film, to create a film-literate cinema audience, to positively influence the overall status of film within the Croatian educational system, and through all of the above, to support Croatian film production and the wider audiovisual community.

On the Digital Film Education platform, non-professional short films of various genres and from different national cinemas—including Croatian cinema—are available for viewing. These are films made by children and young people that have been awarded at the Croatian Children's Film Festival, the Youth Film Festival, and the Four River Film Festival.

The Film Education Program is endorsed by the Academy of Dramatic Art at the University of Zagreb, the Faculty of Teacher Education at the University of Zagreb, the Department of Film Studies within the Department of Comparative Literature at the University of Zagreb, the Department of Croatian Language and Literature at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka, the Croatian Audiovisual Centre, the Croatian Film Archive Department (Croatian Cinematheque) at the Croatian State Archives, and the Media Literacy portal. The program is conducted with the positive expert opinion of the Education and Teacher Training Agency and the Ministry of Science and Education.
