The film programs of the Croatian Film Association (HFS) have been continuously held since 2001, initially twice a week at the Kinoteka venue in Zagreb, and since 2004 on a daily basis at Tuškanac Cinema, located at Tuškanac 1.
Over the course of two and a half decades, this cinema has served not only as a regular venue for curated archival programs and films from both international and domestic distribution, but also as a host to numerous film events, festivals, showcases, and educational programs organized in partnership with HFS by various film organizations and institutions.
What makes Tuškanac Cinema distinctive and relevant is its programming policy, which is rooted in a cinémathèque-style approach. Its primary goal is to educate audiences and continually revisit the highlights of world cinema across all genres, styles, and formats. Over time, Tuškanac has become the leading repertory cinema in Zagreb, known for its carefully curated programs, retrospectives of renowned international and Croatian filmmakers, genre-specific cycles, experimental and animated films, and thematic screenings. Introductory lectures by film scholars further encourage discussions and reflections on the films and cinema as an art form.
Today, the film programs of HFS are among the few in Croatia that systematically preserve film heritage, explore forgotten or neglected authors, and foster dialogue between cinematic classics and contemporary film poetics. The programs regularly include works that are not available through commercial distribution, thus fulfilling an important archival, cultural, and educational role. HFS places particular emphasis on developing young and student audiences. In 2024 and 2025, partnership agreements were signed with 13 faculties of the University of Zagreb, providing students with free access to all screenings within the “Tuškanac on the Road” program.
Launched in 2006 as “Experimental Tuesday,” the program is now known as Short Tuesday (“Kratki utorak”), and as of 2025 it is curated by film critic Jelena Pašić. The program is dedicated to short and experimental films that explore the boundaries of cinematic form and is held monthly, featuring discussions with filmmakers and expert guests.
Committed to ensuring equal and inclusive access to cinema for vulnerable groups, HFS has been running the Sensory-friendly Screenings program since 2016. These specially adapted screenings are primarily intended for children with sensory difficulties but also aim to foster inclusivity, equal participation of all children, challenge prejudice and stereotypes, and promote the perception of diversity as a strength and source of creativity.
In October 2023, the Tuškanac Cinema building was closed for a complete structural renovation. In the meantime, the “Tuškanac on the Road” programs are being held at several alternative venues across Zagreb: Kino Forum at the Stjepan Radić Student Dormitory, Surogat Cinema at the Cultural and Information Centre, the Histrionic Home (former Kozara Cinema), and the Ribnjak Stage. Sensory-friendly Screenings continue to take place across Croatia in local cinemas and public open universities.
