Sensory-friendly screenings

Under the slogan “Cinema Accessible to All,” sensory-friendly screenings are becoming more accessible to their audiences.

These screenings are held in specially adapted environments for children with sensory integration difficulties. Films are shown with dimmed lighting and reduced sound levels, and children are free to walk around, bring their favorite toy, snacks, and drinks. They can attend with parents, grandparents, teachers, or friends — either as part of an organized school visit or individually.

The concept of sensory-friendly screenings was initiated in 2016 by Dr. Eva Brlek, professor of educational rehabilitation and psychotherapist, and Sandra Malenica, professor of Croatian language and comparative literature. The project emphasizes building a sense of community among children and encourages the development of tolerance and empathy. These screenings consistently provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere in cinemas across Croatia, with each screening reinforcing the message of fostering tolerance and embracing diversity.

Several cinemas throughout Croatia are involved in the project, and information about upcoming screenings will be announced on the Croatian Film Association’s website.
