Founded in 1974, the Archive of the Croatian Film Association preserves several thousand film titles in analog, electronic/video, and digital formats, created between 1928 and the present. These works were produced within the activities of member film clubs of the Association or through independent professional production (Author Film Studio, professional productions of the CFA, and independent authors).
In addition to amateur works by adults, children, and youth across generations, the archive includes seminal works by pioneers of Croatian cinema, avant-garde film, and video art, as well as archival materials (photographs, posters, documents, texts, scripts, shooting books, sketches, etc.) from the production of the Author Film Studio and from several key figures of the experimental wing of Croatian cinema, such as Mihovil Pansini, Vladimir Petek, Tomislav Gotovac, Ivan Martinac, Ivan Ladislav Galeta, Miroslav Mikuljan, and others.
In agreement with the Croatian State Archives, since 2001, all film material has been stored in the CSA’s depositories for protection and preservation under appropriate conditions, while the paper-based materials are kept in a suitable archive. Film materials are transferred to video and digital formats to enhance accessibility for film history researchers, students, and other users, while paper documents are digitized to facilitate filmological research. Digital databases are being developed to enable easier cataloging and searching of information related to Croatian non-professional and alternative film.
Archival films are curated into screening programs for distribution to film festivals, educational, museum, and gallery institutions, and various cultural events, or are sent individually upon request by exhibition curators, film program selectors, university lecturers (domestic and international), and researchers of film history—especially amateur and experimental film.
