Founded in 1975, ŠAF was established for children and youth with the aim of creatively spending free time by making animated films, as well as overall education and upbringing of the child. More than 930 members aged 7 to 18 have been involved in ŠAF. Over 390 animated films and about 300 workshop films have been produced. ŠAF organizes numerous film workshops and is a leader in film literacy in schools, as well as workshops for cinema club leaders in Croatia and worldwide. By 2025, thirty international film workshops have been held, alongside numerous exhibitions and film discussions. The association collaborates with professional animators, participates in international projects and film festivals. The founder of ŠAF is Edo Lukman, and since 1998, the leader and secretary has been Jasminka Bijelić Ljubić. More than 500 awards and recognitions have been achieved thanks to continuous and thoughtfully organized work with young animators. Several professional artistic and commissioned films have been made, including films for feature movies, campaigns, a series of ecological animated films, comic strips and cartoons for UNICEF and the Rastimo Zajedno Center, animated parts for theatre performances, and trailers for festivals. ŠAF promotes animated film through free lectures for school children, a program attended so far by over 5300 children and teachers from schools across Croatia.
