Kaoooosss was founded in 2015 at the initiative of teacher Jura Troje, who had been leading film groups at Ivan Goran Kovačić Primary School (where he worked as an IT teacher and later in extended stay education), as well as film workshops for children in collaboration with various organizations and festivals (Zagreb Film Festival, International Children’s Festival Šibenik, workshops in Kraljevica, Croatian Children’s Film Review, Four River Film Festival, MSU, Dubrava People's University, and more). He worked as a freelance film educator for years.
Wanting to expand beyond the slow and limited school system—and realizing that freelance work only offered short-term engagement with new groups—he decided to establish his own organization. Inspired by one particularly persistent workshop participant, Noa Nikolić (who became his assistant and is now the association's vice president and a promising young film producer), the decision to found Kaoooosss was made during a children’s film festival in Istanbul in 2014.
Though its flagship program remains the School of Fiction Film (a film workshop program for elementary students recommended by the Ministry of Science and Education), the association also runs children’s rock bands, records concerts, podcasts, aftermovies, and continues to expand into various creative and educational projects. Therefore, Kaoooosss is not registered as a classic film club, but as an association for the promotion of creativity, culture, education, and literacy.
