16TH YOUTH FILM FESTIVAL & 4TH FOUR RIVER FILM FESTIVAL KICK OFF!
READY, SET, CEDEVITA GO!
The yellow colour has swept over the streets of Karlovac! The 16th Youth Film Festival and the 4th Four River Film Festival kicked off on 7th Sept, at 10 o’clock with the Cedevita GO prize competition, sponsored by the Cedevita Atlantic Grupa brand. Twenty-one participants divided into four teams, from the schools: Karlovac Gymnasium, Karlovac Medical High and Industry and Crafts High, competed for the Cedevita prize package. The teams in this big game had to collect film clips at for different locations – City Theatre Zorin dom, Edison cinema, the Youth Library and Karlovac Gymnasium, and afterwards put them together at the Grabrik Youth Centre. We will find out which team was the fastest on Friday, 9th Sept, at 6:30 PM, after the 7th competition screening, at the City Theatre Zorin dom.
ABOUT 300 KIDS ENJOYED IN THE ADVENTURES OF LITTLE IVO, THE MAIN CHARACTER IN THE BLUE SEAGULL
Only an hour later, the program for the youngest audience started at the main festival venue which quickly became packed with kids accompanied by their parents and teachers. The organizers of the festival – the Cinema Club Karlovac and the Croatian Film Association – have prepared a unique cinematic experience for the four days of the festival: today we had the pleasure of seeing a film over five decades old, the first Croatian film for young audiences – The Blue Seagull, by Branko Bauer, while over 300 kids attended the screening, also entertained by the mascot of Dukatino, the kids dairy dessert.
HIGH SCHOOL KIDS MEET HIGH SCHOOL IDS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD!
While our youngest film fans enjoy their Dukatino desserts and eagerly await the next day’s screening of The Little Flying Bears, the high school kids can in just a few hours find out about similar festivals and workshops dedicated to high school filmmaking from Croatia and abroad – in the side programme High School Kids for High School Kids. Today at the Youth Library we present the Nordic Youth Film Festival – the Norwegian festival arisen from a desire of a few enthusiasts to encourage the work of local young filmmakers; the platform to help shape and express one’s own opinions on current world issues – International Youth Media Summit; and Kid’s Eye Film Festival – a relatively young festival of youth film form Hungary often organizing various workshops and kids summer kamps.
FILM COMES HOME – EDISON CINEMA GOES YELLOW
We head out to the festival's main location for the day at 8:30 PM. There, after five long years, we will hear again the charming clatter of the 35-mm projector and the 24 images per second will flicker before the eyes of the audience. Film returns home thanks to the grand opening of the 16th YFF and the 4th FRFF. The ceremony will be hosted by the renowned actress from Karlovac, Ms Zrinka Cvitešić, while the mayor of Karlovac, Mr Damir Jelić, the Head Secretary of Croatian Film Association, Mrs Vera Robić-Škarica, Ms Marija Ratković, the Festival Coordinator and Mr Srećko Šestan, the Director of Performing and Audiovisual Arts Board of the Ministry of Culture, will also address the audience during the opening ceremony.
Traditionally, the festival will be inaugurated by the three winners of the last year’s edition, this year aided by the four festival mascots: Cowboy, Sith, Charlie Chaplin and Professor Balthazar.
The grand opening will be followed by the first screening of the best of high school films in competition (from Moldova, Slovenia, South Korea, Germany, UK and Croatia). A film clip from the documentary film 1579 – 1979, directed by Oscar-winning Dušan Vukotić and made for the 400th anniversary of Karlovac will also be screened at the opening, as well as Friday, a film from the 60s whose authors are the predecessors of sorts of today’s cinema club – the members of the Kino group of the Dr. Ivan Ribar Gymnasium at the time. One of the authors of the film Friday, prof. Josip Šimunčić will also address the audience.
After the charms of the seventh art, the visitors of the festival will shift their attention to the first art, music. At 10:30 PM in the Edison cinema foyer renowned band from Karlovac, The Chocolate Nipples, is performing.
This is only the first day of the festival. What awaits us in the next three? The yellow film madness at its best!
