11 Years of Auctorial Studio

On the occasion of publishing a catalogue and a DVD of Auctorial studioFFV, Marijan Krivak reveals the eleven years of history of one of the most prolific Croatian film and video clubs, and analyzes the representative achievements from the DVD. Founded in 1992, at the beginning of what may be called the least favourable decade for any creative activity, Auctorial studio has so far produced almost 200 works. Apart from the solid authorial core (the most prolific and the most successful authors are Milan Bukovac, Milan Bunčić, Tomislava Vereš, Stjepan Vidaković and others), its production was marked by other, today prominent, Croatian filmmakers. Since its beginning, the most representative characteristic of the Auctorial studio was an inclination towards media experiment.
Questioning of perception, as one of the domains of experimental aesthetic, becomes a tacit self-imposed authorial procedure of Auctorial studio. The mechanism of the camera and film projector, as well as the granular structure of video-screen, became a sufficient reason for creative experiment, for post-cultural decomposition of formal and substantial elements of artistic work, text... Everything that a tape, camera, and even regular wear and tear and decay of raw material represent as basic condition of video production becomes the topic of the work itself. When we add endless variability of computer editing of pictorial recording and digital painting, the possibilities are really infinite! The corpus of Auctorial studio drinks from that well in its most interesting and finest achievements.
