The author analyses the development of video technology, the differences that exist today between particular systems (PAL, NTSC, SECAM), the new possibilities that video technology offers to film industry, as well as the differences that still separate film technology from video technology.

He particularly analyses new possibilities of high resolution television (HDTV), different solutions that are evident in the development of European, American and Japanese approaches to the development of HDTV, and also a need for standardization of the development which includes the standardization of the production of HDTV technique.
