Authenticity versus intellectualism
New Brazilian cinema in Film Programmes
An essay on five Brazilian new production films presented as part of the Zagreb Film Programmes: Walter Lima Jr.’s Os desafinados (2008), Marcos Jorge’s Estômago (Estomago, 2007), Jorge Durán’s Proibido proibir (2007), Eliane Caffé’s Narradores de Javé (2003) and Walter Salles’ Central do Brasil (1998). Presenting different genres and authors from different generations, the cycle has little to do with latest Brazilian hits such as Fernando Meirelles’s City of God (2002) and Jose Padilha’s Elite Squad (2007) but it points to recognizable tendencies in Brazilian film in terms of themes and style that have been existent from the Cinema Novo movement.
