On Fragments of a Mosaic or the Split Brand of ’Dialectics’

Split Film Festival, Split, June 3rd-10th 2004.

Although Split Film Festival from the very beginning, favored experimental film, video and new media, its ninth edition offered diversified program. With separate competitions for short and feature-long films (special category for video does not exist any more) and program (presentation) of works in new media, SFF offered: a choice of feature films in Fokus selection, selection of middle and full length documentaries (Forum), films about film (Image); in special program: hommage to Stan Brakhage (posthumous laureate for life achievement), selective retrospective of Aleksandar Sokurov, cycle dedicated to blues and blues-musicians (with feature filmy by Scorsese, Wenders, Eastwood, Figgis, Burnett and Pearce), a retrospective of School of National Health, works by students of Art Academy in Split and program of experimental digital films — Onedotzero.
Festival overview limits itself to more provocative parts of the program: Godard’s film Our music (Notre musique), political documentaries screened in Forum selection, attendant program of feature film (Fokus selection) and to retrospective of documentaries by Russian director Aleksandar Sokurov.
