Of democracy and documentarism

18. International festival of documentary film Amsterdam (IDFA) November 25 — December 3, 2005.

Text reviews the 18th international festival of documentary film in Amsterdam (IDFA 2005). The author of the article comments on the recent growing popularity of documentary films in the world, with a critical review of the relationship of documentarism, democracy and social context. Considering this to be its main feature, this is also the standpoint from which IDFA approaches documentaries. The article offers the history of the festival, descriptions of categories and awards, how the Forum functions (a festival section enabling meetings of authors and producers, discussions about projects and distribution), commenting the absence of Croatian authors and producers. The remainder of the text comments the program of the last festival, with focus on the awarded titles.
