Vedran Šamanović Award

2012 VEDRAN ŠAMANOVIĆ AWARD
Winner: animator DARKO MASNEC for JA VEĆ ZNAM ŠTO ČUJEM (I already Know what I Hear)

In the very lively field of Croatian animation film production, “I already Know what I Hear” by young author Darko Masnec stands out for its unique and original approach to image and sound, its proneness to abstraction and radical questioning of form. The film’s basic characteristics position it as is one of the forerunners, if not the very first artistically extremely relevant attempt at the exploration of the artistic language beyond the point reached by the most radical representatives of the Zagreb School of Animated Films, Vladimir Kristl in particular. Therefore, even though it contains some traditional elements, the film moves beyond them and it is safe to say that it stand out from the digital media conventions for the maturity and intellectual complexity of its exploration and the concept which questions the material implications of animation but in which technology and the medium of animation are guided by a clear idea, strong emotions and a sense of rhythm rarely seen in Croatian animation and experimental production.
