The purpose of this work is to demonstrate the gradual
development of the sitcom (situation comedy) on
American and British televisions, not limiting itself to
the mere history of the mentioned TV-format, following
persons, works and events that influenced its
development. The aim is to point out the differences
and similarities of comedy in the two countries, to
demonstrate the attitude of TV companies towards
authors, to find the most important authors who inspired
next generations through their works and to
try to identify contemporary authors who could be
an inspiration for the next generations. As part of the first chapter, we follow British TV comedy from
its beginnings related to satirical theatre companies,
through the time of Monty Python (1969-74) and
Blackadder (1983-89), all the way to the most recent
works by Ricky Gervais and Armando Iannucci.
