FACES OF AMERICAN CINEMA

Popular cinema vampirism

After the mostly monstrous cinema interpretations of vampires, Edward Cullen presents a type of vampire that one falls in love with. The Twilight story is a consolidation of different genre elements: love romance, fairy tale and horror film. Judging on the basis of the profits generated, this popular series is the phenomenon of the 21st century. The narration arises from archetypal characters – a beast and a lady in trouble. The origin of sexual connotations and horror caused by the concept of death is not new to cinema or literature on this globally spread legend. Market demand shapes mixed genres where romance is combined with horror. The roots of romantic and “undeceased” concepts can be traced through history and the psychology of Eros and Thanatos. The popularity of this blooming hybrid genre is connected to an artificial catharsis whereby it becomes possible to meet the demand of the audience – to be special.
