FACES OF CROATIAN CINEMA

Traces of western in Croatian cinema: The Convicted by Zoran Tadić

Emerging in the later period of Yugoslav history, Zoran Tadić's features establish a dialogue with a number of genres, such as the (originally American) Western genre. The text also puts Tadić's film The Convicted in the social context of the time when the film appeared, in which social life in socialist Yugoslavia (where the film is set) is demythologized by remythologizing the Western. Analysing its characters, their mutual relationships and film's narrative solutions, the text explains why the film is a piece of work which would, if it was part of American cinema, be seen as an introduction to later westerns of good quality.
