PORTRAIT OF THE FILM DIRECTOR: KRSTO PAPIĆ

Oppositions in Krsto Papić's documentaries

The entire Krsto Papić's documentary work is based on oppositions. The first basic contrast is the opposition between the old and the new, the rural and the urban and the traditional and the modern. The next basic contrast is the opposition between the government and the people, from which the opposition between the ideology and the reality arises and to which the oppositions between the rich and the poor and the powerful and the weak are linked. I will describe how Papić builds his documentaries on these oppositions, using stylistic oppositions between the film of the truth and engagement and the gloomy and the witty. Considering the fact that the mentioned thematic oppositions are obviously linked to the social and the political, it is clear that the analysis shall also encompass social, and political and critical tendencies of Papić’s documentary work.  Finally, based on these oppositions and tendencies, I shall explain a strong connection between Papić’s documentary and feature films and determine what is missing in terms of his documentaries’ view on life and its human potentials.
