FROM THE HISTORY OF CROATIAN CINEMA

Searching Through Films of ”Hrvatski slikopis”: Contribution to Lovro Matačić’s Biography

The author studies the film Borci za Hrvatsku (Fighters for Croatia, 1944) in which the composer and conductor Lovro Matačićappears. He gives the context of the film in detail: Matačić’s biography from that period, the condition of archived films made at that time and reasons for making a feature-documentary film such as Fighters for Croatia. He analyses visual, technical and dramaturgical aspects of the film and gives a review on its authorship. As opposed to cultural films, Fighters for Croatia belongs to films that revolve around political and military events, such as films Poglavnik i narod, Dan hrvatskog junaka, Mladost Hrvatske, Straža na Drini, Slavlje slobode. According to the opening credits it can be concluded that the film music is made by Matačićexcept for the music performed by Baranović’s ballet Licitarsko srce. Therefore, Matačićis likely to be the film’s music editor and composer. He appears in several sequences, in his (or improvised) office and while conducting.
