The Smell of Reality

(The Perfume — The Story of a Murderer, Tom Tykwer, 2006)

In a comparative analysis of the literary and film presentation of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, the protagonist of The Perfume, the author refers to two completely different (and not always consistent) interpretations of the source of the artistic genius by Süskind and Tykwer.

Incorporating the film interpretation into Lacan’s (and Kristeva’s) theories on psychosexual development, the author places the silence art of P/perfume between the Real and the Symbolic. She also tackles gender and cultural stereotypes that Tykwer’s film relies on.
