Youth jury

Esra Mueller, Germany
I watch a lot of movies and series in my free time and last year I even won an award at a festival called UAct for my short film called “Der Picasso”. I am currently in the 11th grade and I am hoping to go to a film school. I do not really have one favorite movie but I really liked the movie “City of God“. The movie is a powerful, moving, real and funny masterpiece. What I really liked about the film was the acting and the worldbuilding because it feels like a real place and you have the feeling that you can see everything that is going on in the world. I also really like any movie from the directors Hayao Miyazaki (“Howls Moving Castle”) and Makato Shinkai (“Your Name”). In Karlovac, I am expecting to see many different and interesting films and to have the chance to see as much of the festival as possible

Lara Bitter, Germany
One of my interests is music and I like to draw. My favorite film genres are comedy, action, thriller and sci-fi. My favorite movie is "In Time". It's an action-thriller with Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried. It's also with science fiction and I watched it eleven times and it is still interesting and exciting. I expect to meet nice people in Karlovac, to watch amazing movies and to enjoy the good weather.

Timon Gourdon, Germany
I love to dance, draw or to act. I can speak English, German, French and a little bit of Japanese. As a person I am really shy but for performance or theatre, I am really self-confident. I do not really have one favorite movie because I love a lot of films so … I just decide to choose "Titanic". I love emotional movies a lot! In Karlovac, I expect great and fun times with other people.

Philene Ensink, Germany
I am very excited to take part in this festival and to meet people from different countries and cultures. I guess that I have already watched every movie that exists. When I'm not watching movies or series, I meet my friends or play piano. My favorite movie is "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" because I think that these topics which are bullying and depression are very important for people in our age and in some ways I can identify with the protagonist. In Karlovac I would like to meet and speak to people from other countries and cultures. I think that not many people our age have the opportunity to do something like this.

Davide Nobile, Italy
I am a boyscout and I love doing outdoor activities, especially with my friends. Some of my hobbies are playing volleyball and listening to music or singing. I think I am responsible, determined to achieve my goals and a very joyful person. My favorite movie is "Sister Act" by Emile Ardolino because I love musicals and I appreciated a lot the performance of Whoopi Goldberg, one of my favorite actresses. Moreover, I enjoyed all the songs and the funny parts. I believe that the festival in Karlovac will bring a lot of happiness and fun to the last days of the summer. I expect to meet a lot of teenagers from all over the world and to watch movies that will leave something in my mind.

Martino Napoli, Italy
I love theatre and art. I'm going to start last year of high school and then I've no idea about which university to choose. I only know I don't like mathematics. I have been involved in theatre since I was eleven and I still love it. That interest for theatre began as a game but with time it turned into a real passion.  That passion for art has changed in the last two years, in which it has become more conscious and mature, but it has never decreased in intensity. And it never will. My favorite movie is “Big Fish” by Tim Burton, because at first I loved all actors playing, especially MacGregor's one. Then, I love the plot which is focused on the importance of having a relationship with our parents and the easier way on which the relationship is built, in this case tales and stories. I also love the importance of art in that movie, especially the character of the master of the circus. In Karlovac, I hope that I'll meet a new kind of movie and a new kind of "perception of art". I'm sure that I will learn something about different cultures and different ways to live the everyday life. I hope to visit historical places and to see theatre/street art playing.

Antonino Piemonte, Italy
I fell in love with movies when I was three years old and I really like festivals because there I can meet other people from other parts of the world. My favorite movie is “Edge of Tomorrow” because this movie has got a wonderful plot and I appreciated the performance by Tom Cruise. I've been four times in the jury of Giffoni Experience which is one of the most important film festivals in Europe (for people of my age)... so I hope that this festival will be exciting and funny like the festival of Giffoni...

Antonino Piemonte

Anna Lodice, Italy
I am a fan of books and movies and a six times Giffoni experience juror. Beside Italian (of course), I speak English and German. My favorite movie is “Big Fish” by Tim Burton. I really loved this movie because it's eccentric even for a director like Tim Burton. Thanks to it, I understood that magic is in the eye of the beholder. I'm sure the festival in Karlovac will be such an amazing experience. I met this year in Giffoni two guys from Croatia and they were raving about it, so I have a lot of good expectations.

Lucija Katarina Šešelj, Croatia
I have graduated from the Classical High School and this year I will start studying at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb. In high school, I took a course in the Film Studies, where I was introduced to film art. After discovering the film art workshops at the Tuškanac Cinema, I had the opportunity to be a part of the youth jury at the Zagreb Film Festival, as well as to participate in the programs of the Croatian Film Association. My favorite film is “Babel” by Alejandro González I?árritu. I love that film because of the extremely interesting stories it deals with and the ways the stories are interrelated and elaborated in the film, which make it a very interesting drama. It seems like the director thought about every possible detail, which provides this film with a special kind of beauty. I expect the festival in Karlovac to be full of positive energy like last year, full of young people who enjoy making films, and full of their interesting works.

Paula Kovač, Croatia
I am a student of the International Baccalaureate program of the XV High School. I love to watch and create films, and I have been doing that since the seventh grade. Apart from films, I love photography, books, making music and of course, little animals.  My favorite film is “Dead Poets Society” by director Peter Weir. Apart from the interesting plot and characters that are easy to identify with, one of the main roles is played by Robin Williams, my favorite actor. I love the way they connected poetry and literature with film, and how they used film art to convey the beauty of words. Considering the age of the main characters, it was easy to connect with them and understand their decisions. Apart from that, the film points out to one of the familiar and common issues we are facing today - the manner of education in schools. Children are expected to think own less and less on their, and teachers lose their will to lecture and teach. Confrontations between students, teachers and parents are unfortunately more common. This film deals with that topic and shows how you should motivate the youth to desire knowledge and teach them the things important for live, like self-expression, persistence, thinking on your own, confidence, courage, decisiveness, etc. The end, although sad, is very instructive and it shows in a phenomenal manner how much people like that matter to the youth and how influential they are on us, thus showing the importance of teachers and professors. This is a film that motivates the viewers to expand their beliefs and motivates us to make a change in this world. I expect Karlovac to feature a lot of various films, good fun, new (and old) friends, memories I will cherish for a long time and encouragement to be a part of such a wonderful and unique festival next year as well!

Ora Kovač, Croatia
I am a student of the 11th grade in the International Baccalaureate program of the XV High School. I have been watching and making films since the 7th grade, apart from that I love playing tennis, cycling and skateboarding, reading, playing video games and I adore little animals. My favorite film is “Hotel Grand Budapest” by director Wes Anderson. It is a combination of a creative and smart script with brilliant directing that makes this film intense, interesting and completely hilarious in a very unusual (characteristically for Anderson) manner. I expect a lot of fun in Karlovac, hanging out with new (and some old) friends, and of course, a lot of great films.

David Gašo, Croatia
I am a student at the II High School in Osijek, and I have been making films and directing as an amateur since the later grades of primary school. I have loved film since forever, and apart from film art, I like writing, acting and graphic design. I am a member of the successful Film and Drama Group Thalia at school, that has achieved great results for a series of years at several festivals and competitions. I am a filmmaker because I have lived with film for a long time and apart from regularly watching films and running away to the worlds of others, I love to create my own worlds. My favorite film is “Misery” by director Rob Reiner, based on the Stephen King novel of the same name. This is one of the first films I have ever watched. I expect a lot of films in Karlovac and an entertaining, and I believe, a quality program.

David Gašo

Dorotea Rosić, Croatia
I have been an amateur filmmaker for several years and I am a student of media design since this year. I have attended the II High School in Osijek, which was an excellent platform to progress in film-making. I participated in many film festivals and had a lot of success. I plan to continue making films and progress in the craft. The film “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer” particularly impressed me as the topic is different and tackles intriguing interpersonal relations. A significant role is taken by artistic shots and the representation of the world through the eyes of an antihero. I expect creativity, ambition and involvement of participants in Karlovac. I also expect good entertainment, but that isn’t even in your question.

Dorotea Rosić

Kajan Branimir Bulić, Croatia
I have made several films until now and have participated in various film workshops (Young Film Academy, RED Workshop for Digital Natives, Kraljevica Film Workshop etc.). I see film direction as my calling.  My favorite film is “Pulp Fiction”. I love Tarantino’s cinematography style and his fantastic writing. This film has incredible dialogs, characters and plot. I expect to get the opportunity to meet other people with same or similar interests in Karlovac, with whom I could stay in touch and maybe cooperate in the future.

Charlotte Symmons, Hungary
I am dedicated to sharing my passion – film – with a wider audience. This is why I work at two international Film Festivals – Budapest Short Film Festival (BuSho) and Budapest International Documentary Film Festival (BIDF) – in the respective organizational teams. I chose to work in an international setting, because I speak three languages (English, German and Hungarian) that I speak, while meeting people from across the globe. My favourite movie is Gone with the Wind, because "Tomorrow is another day!".

Charlotte Symmons

Szimonetta Gerendai, Hungary
It's very unusual to talk about myself, I already know my own story. I'm curious about others so I am the first one to speak. And the best part is not obvious to others. I like thought-provoking movies like “Memento”, “Gone Girl” and “Shutter Island”. I like music, but I do not go to music festivals. I like movies and attend film festivals. And how do I see the difference? The fact that film festivals are a lot more fun; you sit before a movie so it feels like this is speaking to me and just me. After that, I can talk to others about what experience they give me

Szimonetta Gerendai

Zétény Varga, Hungary
I am an animator and graphic artist from Hungary. I was always interested in the creative ways of making movies, so that’s why I started to explore this aspect of art, experimenting with new techniques in computer animation and filmmaking. My favorite movie is “The Truman Show”. I like how it illustrates the capitalist TV companies in a humorous, ironic manner. In Karlovac, I expect a refreshing and original film experience and a lot of professional growth.

Zétény Varga

Olivér Bognár, Hungary
I’m a 24-year-old animation student from Hungary. I love dark humor and all the non-conformist movies, which can show me something new, something unusual, something which doesn’t fear to create a disgraceful, shocking atmosphere. I think a good movie is the one in which you can decide in the first scene whether you’d like to watch the whole film or not, even if only one person stays in the theatre. I don’t really have a favorite movie, but if I had to pick one, it would be rude to not choose a Tarantino movie. I’ve been a massive fan of his work ever since I was a teenage boy. I would say my favorite is ’The Hateful Eight’, because the characteristics of Tarantino’s movies actualize themselves mostly in this masterpiece. In Karlovac I expect to meet a lot of new people and to see movies which expand my scope of perception.

Olivér Bognár

Matej Stanojevikj, Macedonia
I'm an explorer of aesthetics, a film lover, music listener, book reader, outgoing and otaku (big anime fan). My favorite movie is “Pulp Fiction”, because it is created by my favorite producer and director Quentin Tarantino. In Karlovac, I expect to create lots of new friendships, do a lot of learning about films and start new and great film projects.

Matej Stanojevikj

Melina Stojanovska, Macedonia
If you ask my friends to describe me in a few words, I'm sure they woul tell you that I'm talking at a speed of 200 miles per hour, so much that sometimes even when I'm asleep. I am communicative, open to new friendships and I always say what I mean. I want to socialize and go out, and in my free time I attend a course in Spanish and drama. I love to read and write, and until several years ago, I actively practiced figure skating. It is a passion I had to abandon because of the numerous injuries and the energy it requires. My favorite season is winter, because I enjoy skiing and snow. It may sound childish, but my favorite movie has always been and will be "The Lion King". I admire this timeless Disney classic because of the protagonist - my favorite animal-the lion - and the message it sends. No matter how hard it is, we should always fight for what we want without forgetting who we are and where we come from. From the festival in Karlovac, I am expecting new acquaintances that will grow into friendships for a lifetime, unforgettable fun, and, of course, good films.

Melina Stojanovska

Stefan Mitikj, Macedonia
I am not just an ordinary piece of a puzzle called my generation. I want to distinguish myself from others and break the monotony. Since I was little, I was interested in photography, and I enjoy it more with each day. I adore when I “capture” unusual stuff with my camera, where my creativity stands out. I want to listen to good music from the time of my parents, because it is music with content and not just music in form, but I mostly enjoy a movie with a powerful message. My favorite movie is definitely “Dead Poets Society”, because it contains a timeless message - it shows how stereotypes and prejudices break, teaches us how to get out of our shells, follow our dreams and ‘seize’ the day. Carpe Diem! From the festival I expect to meet many new creative minds and to build strong friendships, as well as to enjoy great films that will be shown on the movie screen.

Stefan Mitikj

Tamara Trajkovska, Macedonia
I'm student at the Faculty of Law in Skopje. Last year, I participated in Giffoni Macedonia and I had great time, so I hope this year in Karlovac will be just as exciting. My favorite movie is “Gone with The Wind”. You simply cannot be indifferent to a movie with a lovely love story, with excellent cast, fantastic music and pastel colors that make the film even more beautiful and timeless. From the festival I expect, of course, excellent friendship, smiling and positive people, and certainly to upgrade our knowledge for the film industry.

Florjan Ostrožnik, Slovenia
I'm currently in the 10th grade. I love going to the gym and computer engineering but also video games. I love making new friends and looking forward to it. My favorite movie is “Interstellar” because It stands out in many senses, for example the story. The imagination and creativity in the movie are amazing, I can't even believe how good the crew was. In Karlovac I expect to learn new stuff and also to make new friends but mostly I look forward to having a lot of fun.

Florjan Ostrožnik

Jaka Kunič, Slovenia
I'm a member of a multimedia group. My job in the group is filming, editing and acting. My favorite movie is “Born to Race”, because I love cars. Especially older cars like Ford Mustang, Subaru Impreza... In Karlovac I expect to learn something more about editing and recording. I hope I will find some new friends.

Jaka Kunič

Marko Trošt Čebela, Slovenia
I'm in the 10th grade of the Trbovlje Gimnazija in Ekonomska Šola. I make films at the Mladinski center Trbovlje. I'm big fan of racing video games. My favorite film is “Martian” because it’s a science-fiction film. The film scene is interesting and I really like the idea that they want to convey: how is the life on Mars. I think the actors made a fantastic film that will always stay in my memory. In Karlovac I hope to learn some new things about film and I hope to make new friends.

Marko Trošt Čebela

Metka Dolanc, Slovenia
I like to record, edit, and direct. I'm interested in films and theatre. I'm a biker and I'm obsessed with MotoGP. I've been the biggest fan of “The Lord of the Rings” since I can remember. I would like to take part in this festival because I would like to gain new experiences, learn new things and meet some new friends.

Metka Dolanc

Nastja Planinc, Slovenia
I like to make vlogs or just films in my free time for fun. My favorite movie is “Suicide Squad” because it's an action film and it's wild. I like the theme of the movie and because it's a Marvel movie. I love all their movies. In Karlovac, I hope to learn something new... Meet new movie makers and just have fun.

Nastja Planinc

Nika Šoštarić, Slovenia
I'm a »II. Gimnazija Maribor« sophomore student. In my free time, I like to dance, read, write and do theatre and film. I even created some films myself. My favorite film is “Rear Window” by the famous director Alfred Hitchcock. Thriller is one of my favorite film genres and the casting there was simply one of the greatest. I'm not sure what to expect in Karlovac, but I hope I will have the chance to see the films of people close to my age and of course I hope to have a chance to hang out with those who are interested in the same things as I am.

Nika Šoštarić

Ivan Aleksić, Bosnia and Herzegovina
I have attended the workshops of MFF School several times, where I went through all the elements of making a short fiction film, and I am especially interested in acting. The Bridge, a film in which I played the main role, won first awards at international festivals for children and youth in 2016 - in Karlovac (Four River Film Festival) and in Dubrovnik. I am an active member of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Association of High Schoolers. My favorite film is “Forrest Gump”, primarily because of its message: “… life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get.” and (of course) because of the fantastic acting by Tom Hanks. I expect new experiences and friendships in Karlovac, and a load of quality film works.
